It may be that you have tinnitus, a condition that millions of people all over the world suffer from. Tinnitus is not something that is going to cause any health problems, and it certainly is not life threatening, but it may be a sign that there is something else going on that needs to be treated.

Most of the time tinnitus is due to abnormalities in any part of the ear but it can also be due to issues in the brain. Many times tinnitus can be a sign of hearing loss though there are many other conditions that cause tinnitus. Generally tinnitus is related to having a singing or swishing noise that originates in your ear. Only you can hear this noise, not anyone else that may be near to you.

Some common causes of tinnitus include fluid in the ear, waxy build up, ear infections or other diseases that affect the ear drum. Many people experience tinnitus due to damaged nerve cells in the ear. This nerve damage is normal as we age but you can cause more damage when you are younger by what you do. Very loud noises can prematurely damage the nerve endings in your ear.

Treating tinnitus can be tricky as you need to treat the cause. However many times the cause of tinnitus is unknown so when the cause is unknown the doctor may not know the best treatment to use. There are various treatment methods and you should understand how all of them work in order to make an informed decision. Additionally it is quite common for tinnitus to disappear naturally.

You can take steps to prevent tinnitus or prevent it from progressing or getting work. This mainly has to do with protecting your ears. If you work around loud noises then there are specific health and safety guidelines that need to be followed to prevent ear damage. If you are attending a rock concert then it is recommended that you wear ear plugs to minimize any damage to your ears.

Many times your blood pressure can affect tinnitus and it is important to control or lower your blood pressure. This includes getting rid of stress and watching your salt intake. You also should avoid foods that may stimulate your nerve endings like tobacco, soda and coffee as these products can make tinnitus worse.

Avoid exposure to loud noises - One of the main causes of tinnitus is loud noise, and those who are exposed to noise a lot often have tinnitus. If you work around heavy machinery or other loud noises, it is a good idea to wear ear plugs. You should also wear them when attending concerts.

Many people will also turn to aromatherapy to treat their tinnitus. Aromatherapy can be used for relaxation and this may help to eliminate your tinnitus. Lemon oil, rosemary oil, rose oil and cypress oil have all been used to treat tinnitus. You can add these oils to a vaporizer, use them in massage or use a diffuser.
